One dead, one injured in fatal shooting in south Kansas City
Update: Kansas City police identified the victim as 29-year-old Keilan A. Dobbs, according to a press release from Sgt. Phillip DiMartino.
One man is dead and a woman is injured following a shooting in south Kansas City.
Kansas City police were dispatched to East 118th Terrace and Winchester Avenue just after 4 p.m., spokesperson Sgt. Phillip DiMartino told reporters at the scene.
Officers found a man and woman in the street, suffering from gunshot wounds, DiMartino said. The man was declared dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Preliminary information indicated that several people had an altercation in the street in front of an apartment complex, DiMartino said. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation, and someone pulled a gun.
Investigators said the people involved might have known each other, although it’s not clear how, DiMartino said. Police said there is no danger to the public.
Officers don’t know how many people were involved in the altercation, or why they were arguing, DiMartino said.
“You can see our investigators are just getting started,” DiMartino said. “Crime scene personnel is here, they’re beginning to canvass, looking for any surveillance footage, any physical evidence.”
The fatal shooting marks the 89th homicide in Kansas City in 2025, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 81 homicides reported at this time last year.
