One man was killed and another was injured in a shooting at an apartment building in southeast Kansas City Thursday, police said.

Officers responded to a call for a disturbance and the sound of gunshots just after 10 p.m. at the 4300 block of Northern Ave. They found a man, 26-year-old Mikeal B. Copenhaver, outside an apartment building suffering from gunshot wounds.

Paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced Copenhaver dead, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesperson.

Officers also found another man at the scene suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, DiMartino said.

DiMartino said police believe a disturbance between multiple people escalated into shots being fired.
