A man was killed in a shooting after a group of people got into an argument in Kansas City’s Marlborough Heights neighborhood Friday, police said.

Officers responded around 8:45 p.m. to 82nd Terrace and Troost Avenue after multiple callers reported the sound of gunshots in the area, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesperson.

Another caller reported seeing a man laying in the road near 8200 Tracy Avenue, DiMartino said. When officers arrived, they found a man in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers provided medical aid while paramedics were en route. The man was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have not yet publicly identified the man who was killed.

The man’s death is being investigated as a homicide, DiMartino said. As of Saturday morning, no one was in custody.

“Preliminary information indicated there was an altercation between several individuals in the street that led to shots being fired and the victim being struck,” DiMartino said in an email.

Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage, DiMartino said. Crime scene personnel were processing the scene Friday for physical evidence.

The killing is Kansas City’s 68th homicide of 2025, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 60 homicides.

According to KCPD crime statistics, 26 homicides this year stem from arguments as of May 31.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact homicide unit detectives at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
