A Kansas City man is charged with murder in connection with a shooting that killed one person in Independence last week, according to court records.

Jadon T. Stumph was charged Tuesday with second degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm, Jackson County Circuit Court records show.

Officers responded just before midnight to the 1600 block of North High Street for a reported shooting. When they arrived, they found a man laying in the driveway of a residence with two gunshot wounds in his left torso, police said.

Paramedics attempted life saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet publicly identified the man killed.

Argument leads to fatal shooting

Witnesses reported the shooting took place after an argument escalated, according to court records.

An ex-girlfriend of Stumph told detectives that she had gotten out of a “toxic” relationship with him, according to court records. She told police that she had ignored multiple calls from Stumph that evening and sent him a photo showing she was on a date.

Stumph then allegedly made threats during a call around 6 p.m. The woman showed detectives her call history and a text thread with Stumph, confirming her statement, court records said.

One witness said they were sitting in a vehicle with another witness at the time of the shooting. She allegedly told officers she received multiple blocked calls which she believed to be from Stumph before he drove up to the residence and parked in the driveway.

Stumph then allegedly confronted the victim, and fired three shots after a brief exchange, the witness said.

Two witnesses identified Stumph as the shooter in a photo lineup, according to court records.

Three .40 caliber shell casings were found at the scene, police said in a probable cause statement. No firearm was located at the scene.

According to prosecutors, Stumph has a history of domestic assault offenses. Stumph is a convicted felon and has previously been arrested on robbery, assault and weapons charges, according to court records.

He is being held on a $250,000 bond.
