25-year-old man dies days after Kansas City shooting, police say
A 25-year old man has died days after he was found critically injured in a Kansas City shooting Saturday.
Police were called around 4 p.m. to the area of 73rd Street and South Benton Avenue, where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds in front of a residence. He was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and died Monday of his injuries, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.
A preliminary investigation indicated to police that the victim and an unknown suspect had an interaction in front of the residence that escalated to gunfire, hitting the victim, according to Becchina. His death is now being investigated as a homicide.
Monday evening, police identified the victim as Zackery Matthews, 25. Police said they are still investigating, but are making headway in identifying a subject of interest in the case.
Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the tips hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted through the tips line.
This marks the 63rd homicide this year, compared to 56 this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes officer involved shootings.
