Man with fatal gunshot wounds found lying on a Kansas City street
Kansas City detectives are investigating a homicide after a man was found lying in the street with gunshot wounds Monday, police said.
Officers responded to 75th Street and Bruce R. Watkins Drive to a call about a medical emergency around 10:30 p.m. Drivers passing by saw a man lying on Bruce R. Watkins Drive and called 911, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesperson.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, DiMartino said. Officers began performing life-saving measures while paramedics were on their way.
Medics transported the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The death is being investigated as a homicide, DiMartino said. Investigators are working to determine what led up to the victim being shot.
Detectives were looking for witnesses and gathering evidence at the scene.
Police have not yet identified the victim.
The killing is Kansas City’s 53rd homicide this year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 48 homicides.
