Authorities identify man killed by KC-area police after casino shooting, chase
Authorities identified a man shot and killed by police after he allegedly fled a shooting at a Kansas City area casino and pointed a gun at officers Thursday.
Kansas City police said Dustin J. Johnson, 36, was shot and killed by two Riverside police officers and a Platte County sheriff’s deputy.
Officers with the Riverside Police Department responded around 6:30 a.m. to a domestic violence incident at the Argosy Casino and Hotel, 777 NW Argosy Casino Parkway, according to authorities.
Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson with the Kansas City Police Department, said a dispute happened between a woman and two men that led to a shooting at the casino. Those involved may have been a woman, her husband and an ex-husband, she said.
Johnson allegedly shot a man multiple times in the casino parking lot before fleeing the scene in a rented U-Haul truck, police said.
The man who was shot at the casino suffered serious, but non life-threatening injuries, and was taken to a hospital where he is recovering, authorities said
After a five-minute police chase, the U-Haul came to a stop on Interstate 29 when KCPD used stop sticks to deflate its tires, Gonzalez said. Officers negotiated with the man for 30 minutes.
Eventually, Johnson got out of the U-Haul and allegedly pointed a gun at officers, Gonzalez said.
That’s when two Riverside police officers and one Platte County Sheriff’s deputy shot Johnson, Gonzalez said. He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
No KCPD officers were involved in the shooting, Gonzalez said, but Riverside police requested KCPD to handle the investigation.
Riverside police are investigating the initial shooting and domestic violence incident at the casino, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
