KC-area police kill man on I-29 after shooting at casino led to chase of U-Haul
A man was shot and killed by Riverside police officers near the Kansas City International Airport after an alleged domestic shooting and police chase Thursday morning, police said.
Officers with the Riverside Police Department responded around 6:30 a.m. to a domestic violence incident at the Argosy Casino and Hotel, 777 NW Argosy Casino Parkway, according to authorities. Police said a dispute happened between a woman and two men, possibly a husband and ex-husband, that led to a shooting at the casino.
The suspect fled the casino in a rented U-Haul truck after allegedly shooting a man in the parking lot, said Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department, which is investigating the incident.
The man who was shot multiple times at the casino was taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries, Gonzalez said.
Police identified the suspect vehicle and followed it using surveillance cameras, Gonzalez said. Dispatchers relayed suspect information to multiple agencies to begin a regional pursuit that lasted around five minutes.
Riverside Police and the Platte County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle, but it was unsuccessful, police said.
The suspect vehicle came to a stop on Interstate 29 near Interstate 435 around 6:40 a.m. after KCPD used stop sticks to deflate its tires, Gonzalez said. Officers negotiated with the man for 30 minutes, attempting to end the situation peacefully. Eventually, the suspect got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at officers, Gonzalez said.
Two Riverside police officers and one Platte County Sheriff’s deputy shot the suspect, Gonzalez said.
The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. No officers were injured in the shooting.
“No officer gets up in the morning with the desire or intent of getting involved in a shooting and killing somebody,” Gonzalez said. “It is very, very, very difficult for an officer that is... put in a situation where use of force and lethal force is necessary.”
Gonzalez said officers used lethal force to protect officers and civilians in the vicinity of the busy highway.
“In this instance, the individual had already shown a propensity for violence by (shooting) another individual... multiple times,” Gonzalez said. “Officers tried for 30 minutes to get him to peacefully surrender and did everything that they could... to make this end easily.”
A handgun that officers believe belonged to the suspect was recovered from the scene.
Investigators have not yet released the identity of the suspect.
Gonzalez said KCPD has been requested to investigate the shooting. No KCPD officers were involved in the shooting, Gonzalez said.
According to KC Scout cameras, northbound I-29 was closed just before 7 a.m. The highway has since been reopened to northbound traffic.
