Person in custody after 2 killed in double shooting on Kansas City’s East Side
Two people were found dead inside a vehicle, and one person was in custody after a double shooting Saturday afternoon on Kansas City’s East Side, a police spokesman said.
Officers responded to the shooting about 12:45 p.m. at East 12th Street and Belmont Avenue, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.
Arriving officers were directed to a vehicle where they found two young men, believed to be teens, inside, Becchina said. Emergency medical crews responded and declared the victims dead.
Officers took a person into custody for further investigation, Becchina said. Detectives were trying to determine the person’s involvement in the shooting.
A preliminary investigation found that the teens were inside the vehicle when they interacted with one or more persons, Becchina said. Shots were fired, and the teens were struck by gunfire.
Crime scene investigators and homicide detectives were collecting evidence and looking for witnesses to determine what led up to the shooting.
The deaths are Kansas City’s 46th and 47th homicides of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 47 homicides reported by this time last year.
