Update: Police on Monday identified the victims as 42-year-old Marvin Sessoms and 38-year-old Maleeka Sessoms.

Kansas City police found two people dead in a Northland motel room as they were investigating a missing persons case Saturday.

Officers responded around 3:45 a.m. to the 4300 block of North Corrington Avenue to follow up on a lead in a missing persons investigation, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesman.

The officers were directed to a motel room, where they found a man and a woman both suffering from gunshot wounds, DiMartino said.

Paramedics pronounced the two victims dead at the scene.

The case is being investigated as a double homicide. Police have not yet confirmed the identities of the victims, or whether they are part of the missing persons case officers were looking into at the time.

Detectives are trying to determine what led up to the shooting. They are looking for witnesses while crime scene personnel collect evidence.

The killings are Kansas City’s 34th and 35th homicides this year, according to data tracked by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 30 homicides.

If anyone has information about the shooting, they are urged to contact homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
