A Kansas City man has been charged with 10 felonies, including murder, in connection with a fatal shooting on New Year’s Day, according to court records.

Jerome Lee Davis is charged with second degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, first degree assault, tampering with a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The charges come after a shooting that killed one man and injured another at a New Year’s Eve party, according to charging documents filed in Jackson County Circuit Court.

Officers responded just after 2:45 a.m. on Jan. 1 to the 3100 block of Elmwood Avenue. Upon arrival, they were directed to a home where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim, identified by police as Calvin L. Bushnell, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Another man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Witness describes trying to hide after unprovoked shooting

A witness to the shooting told police that several people at the party had been shooting celebratory gunshots from the front porch of the home, a police probable cause affidavit said.

The witness, according to the affidavit, told police they saw Davis load a 9mm handgun and then shoot the victims unprovoked in the living room.

Another witness said that Davis, after having allegedly shot the victims, followed her as she tried to hide in a closet, the affidavit said. The witness told police Davis asked her “where the money was,” to which she responded she didn’t know.

The witness also identified Davis as the suspect in a photo lineup, according to the affidavit.

Detectives spoke with the victim who was transported to a hospital, who also identified Davis as the shooter, the affidavit said. The victim told police he knew Davis since he was young, and that Davis had just gotten out of prison.

Alleged shooter was wearing ankle monitor

Detectives used research technology to confirm Davis’ identity and discovered he was on federal house arrest, court records said.

Investigators discovered Davis wore an ankle monitor GPS device, which showed he was at the residence at the time of the shooting, the affidavit said.

In a search of Davis’ residence, the affidavit said, detectives found multiple shell casings consisting of the same calibers recovered from the shooting.

In an interview with police, Davis allegedly told detectives that he was at the party, but was not aware of celebratory gunfire or that a homicide took place, the affidavit said. He allegedly told police that he got a ride home from an unknown person.

On June 6, 2005, Davis was convicted of second-degree robbery and armed criminal action in Jackson County Circuit Court.

As of Wednesday morning, Davis’ age was redacted in court records.

He is being held on no bond, according to a statement from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office. No court events have yet been scheduled in the case.
