Kansas City police were investigating an early New Year’s Day shooting that left one man dead and another injured in the city’s first homicide of 2025.

Officers were sent to the 3100 block of Elmwood Avenue just after 2:45 a.m. on a reported shooting, Sgt. Phil DiMartino, police spokesman, said in an email. Upon arrival, they were directed to a home where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, he said. The victim, identified by police as Calvin L. Bushnell, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Police also found a second shooting victim, DiMartino said, who was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

DiMartino said the death is being investigated as a homicide. Several people were gathered at the home prior to the shooting, he said.

Police asked that anyone with information about the shooting contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $25,000 is available for information submitted anonymously to the hotline.

Last year, Kansas City had 147 homicides, down from 185 in 2023, the deadliest year on record, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.
