Update: The deceased has been identified as Tiffany Chrisman, 29.

One woman was killed when an argument allegedly turned physical in a Kansas City apartment early Thursday morning, police said.

Officers responded just before 4 a.m. to an apartment in the 900 block of East 134th Street for a welfare check. They found evidence of a disturbance and a woman unresponsive with injuries.

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

According to a preliminary investigation by police, the victim and a man were involved in an argument that allegedly turned physical. Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email that a suspect is in custody for further questioning.

Detectives quickly found the suspect with the help of the public and neighboring police agencies, Gonzalez said. As of Thursday morning, police are not looking for any additional suspects, she said.

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the scene to gather evidence and witness statements.

Police did not detail the extent of the victim’s injuries or how they believe she was killed. The victim has not yet been publicly identified.

The killing is Kansas City’s 145th homicide of 2024, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 182 homicides.
