One woman was killed and at least one other was injured in a shooting in Kansas City’s Westside North neighborhood Monday night, police said.

Officers responded just before 8:30 p.m. to the 1300 block of West Bluff Drive to a shooting call. When they arrived, officers were notified that two shooting victims had just left the scene in a vehicle. Officers then found two women who had been shot inside a vehicle on Avenida Cesar E. Chavez.

Paramedics responded and transported the women to a hospital, where one of them was pronounced dead. The other woman was recovering from her injuries, said Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department, in an email.

Police later identified the deceased victim as 26-year-old Michelle Donato.

Disturbance turns violent

Becchina said a preliminary investigation shows that there was a large disturbance outside an apartment on West Bluff Drive involving multiple people, including the victims. The disturbance escalated when more people arrived at the location and one or more of them fired gunshots striking both victims.

Detectives and crime scene personnel are processing evidence where the shooting took place on West Bluff and where the vehicle was located on Avenida Cesar E. Chavez. They are also canvassing for witnesses to help determine what led up to the shooting.

The killing is Kansas City’s 138th homicide of 2024, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 171 homicides.
