A man died in a shooting Tuesday morning after being found by officers who were led to the victim by the sound of gunfire, a Kansas City police spokeswoman said.

Officers were in the area of East 55th Street and The Paseo in the Eastern and Blue Hills neighborhoods of Kansas City when they heard the sound of several gunshots shortly before 9 a.m., said Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department.

The officers began to search where they believed the gunfire had come from, Gonzalez said. Several people flagged down the officers and told them that a person had been shot.

Then, officers found an unresponsive man outside a parked vehicle who had been shot. Gonzalez said the officers began rendering medical aid. Once emergency medical workers arrived, they declared the man dead at the scene.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unknown, and no one is in custody, Gonzalez said. No suspect information was available.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators have responded to the scene to gather evidence and speak with witnesses.

The killing is Kansas City’s 86th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. By this time in 2023, which was Kansas City’s deadliest year, there were 120 homicides. Last year, the city ended the year with a total of 185 homicides.
