A man is dead and another man was detained after a shooting early Wednesday at the Ethans Apartments in Kansas City’s Northland, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded around 6 a.m. to a shooting at the apartment complex in the 1400 block of Northwest 80th Terrace, said Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

Arriving officers found an unresponsive man inside an apartment who had been shot. An emergency medical crew took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

During their investigation, officers gathered a description of a person of interest, who police found walking nearby. Officers detained the man while they investigated the homicide, Becchina said.

Investigators believe there was an interaction inside the apartment that led to the shooting. After the victim was struck, police believe the suspect fled the apartment.

Police aren’t yet sure of the relationship between the victim and the person who was detained.

Detectives and crime scene personnel are searching for witnesses and processing the scene for evidence.

The killing is Kansas City’s 77th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. By this time in 2023, which was Kansas City’s deadliest year, there were 103 homicides. Last year ended with a total of 185 homicides recorded.
