A man died at the hospital after being shot Friday morning on the fringe of Swope Park in Kansas City, a police spokesman said.

The victim was identified as 25-year-old Donte A. Sims, police said Friday afternoon.

The shooting unfolded shortly after 8 a.m. Friday near East 67th Street and Cleveland Avenue in the Foxtown East neighborhood of Kansas City, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

Officers responding to the shooting found a man in a parking lot next to a business, Becchina said. Emergency medical workers took the victim to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was across the street from the Freeway Market and near the intersection of 67th and Cleveland when he was shot, Becchina said.

Detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the area to collect evidence and look for witnesses.

“We are hopeful that someone heard or saw something that can give detectives more information about what took place here,” Becchina said.

The killing marks Kansas City’s 29th homicide of 2024, according to data maintained by The Star. By this time last year, which was Kansas City’s deadliest year in its history, there were 38 homicides. In 2023, there were 185 homicides recorded.
