Kansas City police were investigating a homicide Monday night after a man was fatally shot in the Oak Park Southwest neighborhood.

Several neighbors called 911 around 8:30 p.m. to report the sound of multiple gunshots followed by people seen quickly leaving the 4200 block of Benton Boulevard, said Sgt. Jake Becchina. Police later learned a man had been taken to the hospital by a private vehicle.

The man, who was not identified by police Monday night, died shortly after arriving there, Becchina said. The shooting appeared to have unfolded in the street.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately known, Becchina said, and no one was in police custody Monday night.

Detectives and crime scene personnel searched along Benton Boulevard for evidence and witnesses. Police were also responding to the hospital where the gunshot victim was taken to speak with witnesses and process the vehicle for evidence.

The killing Monday marks Kansas City’s 154th homicide of 2023, according to data maintained by The Star.

Kansas City police were asking anyone with information to contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or call the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
