Man shot late Monday in Kansas City, Kansas, alley dies of injuries, police say

A man died Tuesday after being brought to a local hospital late Monday with gunshot wounds, according to police in Kansas City, Kansas.

The man had been found by police in an alley.

Police identified the man as Thomas Wheeler, 34, of Kansas City. His death is being investigated by Kansas City, Kansas Police Department’s Major Case Unit, said Nancy Chartrand, a department spokesperson.

Around 9:20 p.m. Monday, officers were called to the 500 block of Elizabeth Avenue on a report of shots fired. Wheeler was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The death Tuesday marks the 11th homicide in Kansas City, Kansas, so far in 2023, according to data maintained by The Star. Last year, the city saw 40 homicides.

Police were asking anyone with information about the fatal shooting to contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
