Police are investigating a homicide Sunday night in south Kansas City.

A fatal shooting was reported at about 8:15 p.m. at a home in the 8300 block of Highland Avenue, Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email to media.

The victim, a man, was found suffering from gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene, authorities said.

Police believe the shooting happened inside the home, Becchina said. A person of interest was detained and detectives are not searching for any other suspects.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call KCPD’s homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS.

“We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents,” Becchina said.

The shooting marks the 27th homicide this year in Kansas City, according to data tracked by The Star.

No further information was immediately available.
