A Kansas City police officer was hospitalized over the weekend after a driver failed to stop at a red light and crashed into a patrol vehicle, police said.

As a police car drove eastbound through the intersection of East 18th Street and Lister Avenue Sunday, the driver of a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck drove past a stop sign and ran into the police car, according to an initial crash report from KCPD.

The driver of the truck then drove away from the scene, police said.

Emergency crews were called to the crash scene at about 3:06 p.m. Sunday and the officer was taken to the hospital.

As of Sunday evening, the officer was in stable condition, police said. No other information was immediately available.

Last month, Kansas City police officer James Muhlbauer, 42, and his police dog, Champ, were killed on duty when a driver believed to be traveling more than 85 miles per hour struck Muhlbauer’s police vehicle, which then struck Jesse Eckes, 52, of Kansas City, who was also killed. Jerron Lightfoot, 18, of Tonganoxie, has since been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in their deaths.
