One killed in Kansas City shooting Friday night near 35th and Wayne: police
Update: Police later identified the victim as John Greer, 23.
One person was fatally shot Friday night in Kansas City’s Linwood Homeowners-Ivanhoe neighborhood, according to police.
Police were called around 8:30 p.m. to a residence in the 3500 block of Wayne Avenue on a report of a disturbance. Shortly after dispatchers advised responding officers that a shooting had taken place there, Officer Donna Drake, a department spokeswoman, said at the scene.
One gunshot victim was found and taken by ambulance to an area hospital, Drake said. The victim, whose age and gender were not immediately available, was pronounced dead there.
Police had no suspect information to share. Drake said detectives were searching for witnesses and asked that anyone who knows anything about the shooting share that knowledge with investigators.
“Put yourself in this victim’s family’s shoes. If this was your loved one, you’d want that same respect. And you’d want someone to step up and do the right thing,” Drake said.
The homicide is Kansas City’s 107th so far in 2022, according to data maintained by The Star. Last year, the city saw a total of 157 homicides, representing the second-deadliest year on record.
Police were encouraging anyone with information about Friday’s killing to contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
