Man dies at hospital after shooting outside downtown Kansas City apartments

A man died after being shot Tuesday morning outside an apartment building in downtown Kansas City, a police spokeswoman said.

Officers responded just before 7 a.m. to the Courthouse Lofts in the 800 block of Grand Boulevard on reports of a shooting, said Capt. Leslie Foreman, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Arriving officers found a man with gunshot wounds in front of the building. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Foreman said.

“We do not have any suspect information at this time and are asking for the public’s help,” she said.

Grand was closed just in front of the building was for the remainder of the morning’s rush hour while detectives and crime scene investigators collected evidence and looked for witnesses.

The killing was the 94th homicide reported in Kansas City so far this year, according to data tracked by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 91 killings. Last year became the second deadliest year on record, following a record 182 killings in 2020.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.
