Teenager shot and killed Sunday in Kansas City, Kansas

A teen died at a hospital about five hours after she was shot in a Kansas City, Kansas, neighborhood Sunday, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded to the shooting shortly after 2 p.m. in the 200 block of South Eighth Street, according to Officer Tom Tomasic, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

Officers found the victim, who was in her late teens, inside a home. She was taken to a hospital where she died from her injuries about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Detectives had a person of interest in custody.

The killing is the 19th homicide of the year for Kansas City, Kansas, according to data tracked by The Star. By this time last year, the city had 16 homicides.
