Homicide reported Thursday afternoon at 34th and Forest leads to standoff in Kansas City
Update: Police on Friday identified the victim as 39-year-old Lamont A. Todd. The person of interest was released.
A homicide reported Thursday afternoon near 34th and Forest Avenue led to a standoff, Kansas City police said.
Officers responded to a shooting around 3:15 p.m., said Capt. Leslie Foreman, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department. When they arrived at the scene, they found a man who had been shot. Emergency crews declared the man dead.
A person of interest was taken into custody nearby and a suspect may be inside a residence in the 3400 block of Forest, Foreman said. A standoff began, with tactical units and negotiators called to the scene.
Detectives continued to identify witnesses and gather information at the scene.
Shortly after 11:30 p.m., Foreman said tactical officers entered the residence, but no one was located inside.
This is the 59th homicide this year in Kansas City, according to data tracked by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 57 homicides. Last year became the second deadliest year on record for homicides, following a record 182 killings in 2020.
