One woman was killed and another was injured during a daylight shooting Friday in Kansas City, Kansas, according to police.

Police officers were dispatched around 4 p.m. to the 6200 block of Webster Avenue after receiving a report that a shooting had taken place on the residential street, said Officer T.J. Tomasic, a department spokesman. Officers arrived to find both women outside of a residence there with gunshot wounds, Tomasic said.

One victim was pronounced dead on scene, Tomasic said. She was found by police inside a black car that was backed into a driveway.

The second victim was outside but near the vehicle when police officers got there. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital with a gunshot wound that was not believed to be a serious injury, Tomasic said.

What led up to the killing remained unclear Friday afternoon, though investigators were confident that another party carried out the shooting. Detectives had little immediate success with neighbors, Tomasic said, some of whom heard the shots but did not report seeing anyone nearby when they were fired.

“Right now at this point, we really don’t have a lot,” Tomasic said, adding that detectives remain hopeful someone saw something that will lead to a suspect or suspects.

Evidence at the scene suggested both women may have been inside the car when the shooting happened, Tomasic said. Several shots were fired at them. It was not immediately known whether the shooter or shooters used a vehicle, and police had no suspect information as of Friday evening.

The identity of the woman killed was being withheld by police Friday to allow time for the family to be notified.

The killing is the 10th in Kansas City, Kansas so far this year, according to data maintained by The Star. Last year the city saw 51 homicides.

Kansas City. Kansas police encouraged anyone with information about the fatal shooting to contact homicide detectives at 913-596-3000 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
