Three people found dead in Overland Park home; police investigate possible murder-suicide
Overland Park police are investigating a possible murder-suicide after three people were found dead inside a home late Thursday morning.
Police were dispatched around 10 a.m. to the 9200 block of Nieman Road after a person called for help with a welfare check of three family members inside a residence there, said Officer John Lacy, a police spokesman.
Inside the residence police found three dead, all from gunshot wounds, and a dog that was also shot and killed, Lacy said. Police were called there by the family member who had been unable to contact the victims, Lacy said.
Police have yet to disclose the identities of those killed or say who the suspected shooter is. But Lacy said detectives are confident that one of those inside the home carried out the shooting, saying police are not looking for any additional suspects.
The victims are all adults from the same family, according to police. The youngest was a woman in her 30s, who is the daughter of the other man and woman, who are in their 60s, Lacy said.
Other details, including what led up to the killing and when the crime occurred, were still being investigated.
The shooting took place in a small subdivision of multifamily homes off Nieman Road. Investigators were still on the scene several hours later and the road leading up to the building where the shooting unfolded remained blocked off by police patrol vehicles.
Some neighbors watched from their back patios Thursday afternoon. One man, who asked not to be named, said the neighborhood rarely sees such a police presence. He recalled a similar response five years ago when a neighbor, Henry Gates Jr., 62, was shot and killed in his home in July 2017.
The killings Thursday marked the second and third in Overland Park this year, according to data maintained by The Star. The city saw one homicide in 2021.
Police are asking anyone with information about the Thursday killings to contact the Overland Park Police Department at 913-890-1374 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
