One killed after exchange of gunfire in Kansas City, Kansas, neighborhood, police say

The Kansas City Kansas Police Department is investigating after an outdoor argument involving an unknown number of people ended in gunfire and an uninvolved man was shot dead in his own home Wednesday afternoon.

Around 3:15 p.m., officers were called to the 6300 block of Farrow Avenue and found that an exchange of gunshots had led to one death at the scene, said Nancy Chartrand, a department spokeswoman.

“It’s one of those tragic events where somebody’s argument ends up killing somebody who wasn’t even involved,” Chartrand said.

Other details about the shooting event, including the number of shots fired and information about the suspect, were not immediately disclosed.

Avion Johnson and her 8-year-old son were visiting family on the block when she heard what she described as “a lot of gunshots.” Johnson, who lives nearby and regularly visits, said she knew the shooting victim, saying he was a nice man who was “fun to be around.” She said he lived there with his mother.

Johnson called the event “senseless,” saying the victim was simply minding his own business at home when his life suddenly ended.

“I know what it’s like losing a kid,” Johnson said. “But for something senseless like this, you should never have to go through that. Nobody should know what it’s like losing a kid.”

The killing marks the fifth homicide in Kansas City, Kansas, this year, according to data maintained by The Star. The city saw 55 killings in all of 2020.
