Kansas City man who told police ‘something happened’ charged in girlfriend’s killing
A Kansas City man who told an off-duty police officer that “something happened” as he surrendered at a hospital has been charged in the killing of his girlfriend, prosecutors said in a release.
The Jackson County prosecutor has charged Kelshaun D. Moseley, 28, with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Keva Hill.
Hill’s mother told police that the two had been dating for about a month and that her daughter had just moved in with him about a week prior to her death, according to court documents.
Officers found Hill fatally shot about 4 a.m. Thursday inside a home in the 5900 block of Agnes Avenue. She was declared dead at the scene. Police learned of the homicide when Moseley showed up at a nearby hospital and said he wanted to turn himself in.
Court documents outline case
A witness told police that he was in the parking lot standing outside his vehicle when Moseley approached him and handed him a stack of IDs and other cards. Moseley asked the witness to hold them for him because he was going to turn himself in, according to court documents.
Mosley appeared to be very “hyper” and spoke continuously during their brief interaction, which lasted about 30 seconds, the witness told police. The witness said he believed Moseley allegedly muttered something that sounded like murder, his girlfriend setting him up and someone coming for him.
Moseley then walked into the emergency department entrance of the hospital. A Kansas City police officer working off-duty responded to the area. Moseley allegedly told the officer that he wanted to turn himself in.
According to court documents:
Moseley initially wasn’t forthcoming with details, but allegedly said “something happened” and that he had killed someone. Eventually, he provided the officer with an address to a home on Agnes.
Responding officers found Hill’s body at the address. She had been shot and emergency medical crews declared her deceased at the scene.
The off-duty officer took Moseley into custody and he was taken in for questioning, where he asked for an attorney after allegedly expressing that he was being set up like a time before.
Police investigate crime scene
While gathering evidence, police discovered that Hill had been shot at least twice in the head — one was a close or contact shooting due to the amount of gunpowder residue around the wound.
Police also found several bullet holes in the wall behind and around where the victim’s body was found as well as in other walls of the room. Police found 11 spent 9mm casings inside the bedroom and several live rounds in a small plastic bag and box in the second bedroom.
When detectives notified Hill’s mother about her death, she asked where Moseley was. She said that the two had been dating for about a month.
She said her daughter didn’t share many details about her relationship with Moseley. Her mother, however, allegedly said she saw him grab her daughter and shake her during the last few weeks.
Moseley was being held in Jackson County jail. Prosecutors have requested a cash bond of $250,000.
Hill’s homicide is the 149th in Kansas City this year, according to data kept by The Star, which includes police killings. This time last year, there had been 114 homicides.
