Woman shot and killed at Kansas City home Thursday morning, man taken into custody
A woman was fatally shot early Thursday in Kansas City and a man has been taken into custody, according to police.
Officers were called at 4 a.m. Thursday to a home in the 5900 block of Agnes Avenue, Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.
There they found a woman who had been fatally shot. She was declared dead at the scene.
A man who wasn’t at the home when police arrived contacted authorities around the same time, saying he wanted to “turn himself in,” Becchina said.
The man is in custody as a person of interest in the shooting, Becchina said. Police are not looking for additional suspects at this time.
Crime scene tape still surrounded the home at 8 a.m. Thursday as detectives and crime scene investigators worked the scene.
The homicide is the 149th in Kansas City this year, according to data kept by The Star, which includes police killings. This time last year, there had been 114 homicides.
Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
