Kansas City police identify 1-year-old boy who died in triple shooting Monday
A 1-year-old boy who was fatally shot Monday afternoon has been identified by Kansas City police.
Tyron Payton died in a triple shooting in the 2900 block of East 33rd St.
Detectives are making headway in identifying persons of interest, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.
Tyron was in the backseat of a vehicle that was stopped near a residence when at least one person fired into the vehicle at what appeared to be close range.
The driver drove to a fire station at Linwood and Indiana and asked firefighters for help.
“What they found inside the vehicle was really unfortunate,” Becchina said.
Tyron and two adults had been struck by the gunfire.
A fourth person in the vehicle was not injured. The car, parked near the fire station, was riddled with bullet holes.
Tyron was the most seriously injured.
“They (the child) were transported by EMS to the hospital where they unfortunately died,” Becchina said.
Becchina said the two adults were in stable condition.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker condemned violence in the city, which is on pace to record its deadliest year on record.
Tyron’s death was the 148th homicide this year. At this time last year, there had been 114 homicides, according to data maintained by The Star.
Thirteen people who were 18 years old or younger have died in homicides this year. Tyron was the youngest victim. All 13 died in shootings.
