One dead after vehicle crashes into trees, bursts into flames in Kansas City

One person was killed in a fiery crash early Monday in south Kansas City, police said.

Officers were called about 1:45 a.m. Monday to East 97th Street and Hillcrest Road on a single-vehicle crash, Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.

A Toyota was being driven north on Hillcrest Road at a high rate of speed when it went off the left side of the road, crashed into trees and landed in a ravine below before bursting into flames, Becchina said.

The driver, who has not yet been identified, was thrown from the vehicle during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene.

The streets around the area were blocked for several hours, Jackson County Sheriff Darryl Forté tweeted at about 4:45 a.m. Monday from the scene.

The crash is the 76th fatality this year. This time last year, there had been 53.
