Pleasant Hill man killed, passenger hospitalized after crash Saturday in Cass County

A Pleasant Hill man died hours after the vehicle he was driving crashed into trees Saturday in Cass County, authorities said.

Members of Missouri Highway Patrol were called around 12:15 a.m. to a crash scene on Missouri 7, north of East 203rd Street, according to a highway patrol crash report.

The driver of a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe veered off the right side of the road, then over-corrected, sending the SUV across the roadway and off the left side of the road where it struck several trees.

The driver, 22-year-old Gabriel L. Smith, of Pleasant Hill, was partially ejected from the vehicle in the crash, according to the report.

He was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence where he was pronounced dead several hours later, at 7:15 a.m., highway patrol said.

A passenger in the SUV, a 22-year-old man from Independence, was hospitalized with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, authorities said.
