Kansas City man charged for drug, firearm possession in Operation LeGend

Federal officials charged a Kansas City man Wednesday for possession of drugs and firearms following an investigation into drug sales as part of Operation LeGend, a federal crime fighting initiative.

Dominick A. Campos, 40, was charged in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City with one count of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and one count of possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking.

According to court records, Campos was arrested last week after investigators with the Jackson County Drug Taskforce identified him as the source of methamphetamine in a drug sale investigation and found “various items of drug paraphernalia in his home.”

Campos was arrested at the Argosy Casino, where police had been watching him while others searched his home, records said.

After he was arrested, prosecutors allege, Campos told police he had sold one kilogram of methamphetamine each week since April.

In Campos’s car, officers found two guns along with nearly 4.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, 3.7 kilograms of marijuana, notebooks that appeared to contain record of drug transactions and various other illegal drugs, court documents said.

Campos is one of at least 113 people federally charged in Kansas City as part of Operation LeGend.

Officials said Wednesday that 68 of those charged federally were for “firearms-related offenses,” federal prosecutors said. Thirty-four were charged with narcotics-related crimes and 11 with “other violent crimes,” officials said.

Nationwide, U.S. Attorney General William Barr said about 600 defendants have been charged with federal crimes and more than 2,000 have been arrested nationwide.

The operation is named after 4-year-old LeGend Taliferro, who was fatally shot while sleeping in a Kansas City apartment in June. It sent additional federal agents to Kansas City to help curb a surge in gun violence.

Kansas City is on pace to suffer its deadliest year ever. As of Thursday, 143 people have been killed in homicides this year in the city, compared to 109 by this time last year, according to data maintained by The Star.
