SUV driver strikes two people pushing vehicle to Kansas City gas station, flees scene

Two pedestrians were hospitalized after they were struck by an SUV while pushing a vehicle to a gas station, police said.

Officers were called just before 3 a.m. Sunday to the scene of a hit-and-run crash near East 85th Street and Hickman Mills Drive, said Doaa El-Ashkar, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department.

The driver and passenger of a red Chevy Tahoe were pushing the SUV towards a Phillips 66 after it ran out of gas, she said.

As the passengers of the Tahoe pushed the vehicle, the driver of a silver Chevy Traverse SUV drove up behind them and struck the two pedestrians, El-Ashkar said.

The driver of the Traverse abandoned the vehicle in the road and fled the scene.

The passenger of the Tahoe was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, El-Ashkar said. The driver of the Tahoe was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.
