Police: 4-year-old girl shot Wednesday was caught in crossfire while heading to park

The child shot while exiting a car to play in a nearby park in Kansas City on Wednesday evening is a 4-year-old girl, police said Thursday.

According to the Kansas City Police Department, the girl was shot in the leg when she was caught in the crossfire of a rolling gun battle when she exited her car at East 43rd Street and South Benton Avenue.

“Fortunately, her injuries are not life-threatening, but this cannot be tolerated,” the department said in a Twitter post. “Problems don’t get solved with guns.”

According to a news release, police responded to the area after hearing gunshots around 6:05 p.m.

When they arrived, the release said, officers found a woman on the ground, holding her daughter. Police applied pressure to the child’s injury using a towel provided by a bystander until an ambulance arrived.

In the release, police said two cars were firing at one another while driving south on Benton Avenue. Multiple shell casings were found in the area.
