Man fatally shot in garage near East 49th Street, The Paseo in Kansas City: police

A man was fatally shot Sunday in the garage of a home in the 4900 block of The Paseo, according to Kansas City police.

Officers responded after neighbors reported the sound of gunshots just before 5:30 p.m., said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Before the shooting, a witness told officers, two men got out of a vehicle and had a short interaction with the victim.

The victim, who was in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified publicly.

Detectives were knocking on neighbors’ doors in the hopes of getting a better description of the suspects and the vehicle they were in, Becchina said. They were also looking for any surveillance footage.

The killing marked the 134th this year in Kansas City, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes police shootings. There had been 103 homicides by this time last year.

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
