Police first thought man hurt in hit and run, but fatal injuries were ‘suspicious’

Police initially believed a man found covered in blood in a Kansas City street was a victim of a hit-and-run crash, but his injuries turned out to be “more suspicious,” a police spokesman said.

Police responded shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday to Linwood Boulevard and Elmwood Avenue after a man was found lying in the street covered in blood, said Capt. David Jackson, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, in an email.

The man, who was in his early 20s, was badly injured but was still breathing, Jackson said. He was taken to a hospital where died a short time later.

Originally officers thought the victim was injured in a hit-and-run crash. But his injuries appeared to be “more suspicious,” Jackson said. The man’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

The man’s death is Kansas City’s 128th homicide of the year. By this time last year, the city had 94 homicides.

Across the entire Kansas City metropolitan area, there have been 182 homicides this year.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). A reward up to $25,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.
