One in custody after woman found fatally shot inside Independence home

A woman was fatally shot Sunday night inside an Independence home, police said.

Officers with the Independence Police Department were called about 9:40 p.m. Sunday to a domestic disturbance in the 2600 block of South Arlington Avenue, according to a department news release.

Once inside the home, police found Kimah McDonald, 44, of Independence, with a gunshot wound. She was declared dead at the scene.

A second person inside the home was taken into custody, police said.

McDonald’s killing was the eighth homicide in Independence this year, according to data kept by The Star that includes fatal police shootings. There had been four homicides in independence by this time last year.

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
