One person dead after late-night shooting in western Independence

Police were investigating a homicide after a person was fatally shot in western Independence late Thursday, police said.

Officers responding to the shooting about 10:50 p.m. in the 9300 block of East 16th Street found that one person had been fatally shot.

The victim was pronounced dead at the site of the shooting. No suspect information was released.

The shooting marked Independence’s seventh homicide of this year. By this time this last year, the city had four homicides.

Across the the Kansas City metro area, there have been 181 homicides so far this year.
