Already serving time for murder, Grandview man sentenced for unrelated weapon charge
A Grandview man, already serving 22 years in prison for second-degree murder and armed criminal action, was sentenced to an additional five years Tuesday for illegally possessing a firearm, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri.
Malliek D. Haynes, 27, pleaded guilty in federal court in February to possessing a pistol during a shootout on Troost Avenue in April 2017, the release said.
Haynes was allegedly involved in an argument with several other people at the Troost Market and lifted his shirt to show a gun in his waistband.
After the argument, the release said, Haynes fought with the same people who were in a car in the parking lot. Those in the car allegedly began shooting at Haynes and he returned fire but was shot in the leg.
When Haynes arrived at a hospital, the release said, officers took the gun from his car. Haynes had prior felony convictions, making it illegal for him to have the gun.
Months after the shootout, Haynes was accused of stabbing a man to death at a bus stop at the northeast corner of Independence and Woodland avenues.
He pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to the stabbing last year.
