Man charged with kidnapping girlfriend, shooting at off-duty Raytown officer’s car

An Independence man was charged Friday for allegedly abducting a woman and shooting at the personal vehicle of the off-duty officer who was giving her a ride to the police station that morning, according to a news release from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Tyrone Johnson, 47, is charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with kidnapping, first- and second-degree domestic assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and tampering with physical evidence.

According to charging documents:

Raytown Police Reserve Corporal Douglass Hall noticed a Black Chevy Impala with its front doors open while driving northbound on Raytown Trafficway near 59th Street just after 6 a.m. Friday.

Hall told police he thought the car had mechanical issues, but when he stopped behind it a woman walked up to him and said “get me out of here.”

After the woman got into Hall’s personal vehicle to go to the police station, Johnson allegedly shot at the car, striking the woman in the leg.

The woman told police that during an argument at a hotel that morning, Johnson, her boyfriend, had choked her before dragging her to the Impala and forcing her inside.

When she tried to jump out of the moving car where the officer found her, she said, Johnson slammed on the brakes and threatened to shoot her.

When police responded to the hotel, they allegedly found Johnson kneeling next to a black Impala. Police allegedly saw Johnson putting shell casings into the trash can outside the hotel.

When officers approached Johnson, he allegedly said he had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend and that he didn’t do anything wrong.

Prosecutors asked that Johnson be held in lieu of a $150,000 bond.
