Woman shot while riding in off-duty Raytown police officer’s car early on Friday
A woman who was fleeing an assailant and took refuge in an off-duty Raytown police officer’s car was shot while riding to the police station early on Friday, police said.
The off-duty Raytown police officer was driving in his car down Raytown Road at 6:09 a.m. Friday when he spotted a woman trying to flee from a black car stopped just north of 59th Street, according to a news release from the Raytown Police Department.
The officer, who was not in uniform, let the woman into his car and started driving to the police department just blocks away.
A person in the black car fired multiple shots at the officer’s car before fleeing the scene.
The woman, who was not identified, discovered she was shot after arriving to Raytown police headquarters. The officer was not shot.
Nearly an hour later, police arrested a suspect in Kansas City who was not otherwise identified.
The investigation is ongoing. It marks the third time a police officer in the Kansas City area was shot at in the last 24 hours. On Thursday, two Kansas City Police Department officers were shot in separate incidents.
One officer was treated and released after being shot while responding to a robbery at Independence and Hardesty avenues.
Another officer underwent emergency surgery at Truman Medical Center after a suspect shot him in the head at 31st Street and Van Brunt Boulevard. The officer was in critical condition and later was described as being stable after the surgery.
