Suspect in hit-and-run that killed KC woman surrenders to police, KCPD says

A person suspected in a hit-and-run crash that left a 23-year-old woman dead in Kansas City has surrendered to police, a police spokesman said in an email Monday.

The crash was reported about 2:24 a.m. Sunday near 43rd and Main streets. An investigation determined that a woman was crossing Main Street from the west to the east when she was struck by a southbound vehicle, which left the area, Kansas City police earlier stated.

The woman died at the scene. She was identified by police on Monday as Zahara Kathawalla, a Kansas City resident.

Hours after the crash Sunday, police released photos of a black Ford Focus that was found abandoned several blocks from the crash scene. The photos were released, police said, in an effort to receive additional information from the public.

The car showed damage to the front end and the windshield. A paper temporary tag appeared to have been torn from the car.

Police also circulated photos that showed the car and the victim at the time of the crash.

On Monday, Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a police spokesman, said in an email that the suspect in the case surrendered to police. The investigation continues, he said.
