‘We need justice for this family’: Young father shot and killed in Kansas City, Kansas
A 26-year-old father has been identified by police and family as the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred last week in a Kansas City, Kansas, neighborhood.
Kansas City, Kansas, police said in a news release Wednesday that Narbu Tamang was killed June 4.
The shooting was reported just before 8 p.m. in the 3400 block of Barnett Avenue. Police officers located Tamang, who had been shot. The victim, a Kansas City, Kansas, resident, died at the scene.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been organized for the family on behalf of the Kansas Bhutanese Community Foundation. Rhythm Nepal, who is with the foundation, said they were raising money to help the family cover funeral costs. More than $5,800 has been donated since the online fundraising page was set up three days ago.
“We express our heartfelt grief for the untimely demise of Mr. Narbu Tamang - a Bhutanese Nepali youth,” a statement on the page read. Nepal said Tamang was the only son of a single mother who is ill and depended on her son’s source of income.
“He has a one-year infant child and a sick wife who has to spend all of her time taking care of her family,” the statement continued.
“His untimely demise has deeply sorrowed his entire family. The helpless family has lost its breadwinner. It is in desperate need of financial support, and hence even a few dollars can be a great help for his funeral in this critical COVID-19 situation.”
“We need justice for this family,” he said.
Ram Rai said his nephew, Tamang, was at home on June 4, watching his baby boy. Later in the day, Rai said, Tamang was picked up by a friend and taken to another location, where a fight broke out among a group of people. Shots were fired, Rai said he was told by a witness, and someone shot Tamang as he tried to run away and hide. It’s unclear what led up to the gunfire, and Rai said his family is still looking for answers.
Police announced Wednesday that one suspect has been taken into custody in connection to the case, which has been turned over to the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office for charges, Officer Jonathon Westbrook, a police spokesman, said in an email.
The killing is being investigated by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s criminal investigations division.
