Kansas City teen sentenced to prison after pleading guilty in 2019 shooting case
A Kansas City teenager has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a 2019 fatal shooting and has been sentenced to 17 years in prison, the prosecutor’s office announced Tuesday.
Angel G. Perea, who was 16 at the time, was accused of shooting and killing another teen, 17-year-old Fernando Perez, and injuring two others during a robbery Jan. 26, 2019.
Kansas City police were called to a fire station at 22nd Street and Hardesty Avenue, where the victims were found in a vehicle.
Facebook records showed Perea communicated with another suspect to plan a robbery in the area of Ashland Park Square, The Jackson County prosecutors said in a news release. Witnesses told police Perea negotiated the purchase of a gun from one of the victims with the intent of robbing him during the transaction. Perea, along with an accomplice, then shot and killed Perez and injured two others, witnesses said.
Prosecutors charged Perea with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and five counts of armed criminal action. Perea was earlier certified by Family Court to stand trial as an adult.
Court records show Perea pleaded guilty in January to the charges with the exception of one count of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon, which were dismissed. He was sentenced to prison on Tuesday.
