Man charged in shooting that left 2 dead, 2 injured at Kansas City home

A man accused of shooting and killing two men and wounding two other people, including a teen, at a Kansas City home has been arrested and charged, the prosecutor’s office announced Tuesday.

Raymond J. Cage, 31, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault and four counts of armed criminal action in connection to a May 2 shooting that occurred at a home in the 2300 block of Van Brunt Boulevard.

Kansas City police were called about 7:15 a.m. to investigate the shooting. Terence Rodgers and Frederick Tolbert, both 24, died from gunshot wounds and a 16-year-old boy was injured, according to charging documents. A fourth shooting victim had fled the scene.

Hours before the shooting, a witness at the home told police, there had been an argument involving an unknown man over money and pills. Later on, the witness said, the man returned. The man allegedly stated, “You thought I was playing,” and then the witness heard what sounded like a shotgun being racked, followed by four or five shots, court records said.

Another witness told police he saw the man he knew as “Ray Ray” return to the home and start shooting. The man was later determined to be Cage after the witness was shown a photo lineup, according to court records.

Surveillance video showed the suspect fleeing the scene after firing a weapon.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Cage on June 5 at a relative’s home in St. Louis in connection to a federal firearm charge. Cage had been indicted by a federal grand jury in Kansas City with being a felon in possession of a firearm in a separate incident from January. He had also been wanted by Kansas City police for questioning in the homicide.

In an interview with Kansas City detectives, Cage denied ever being at the house and stated he did not know the victims or witness. He then requested an attorney.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges on Monday. Bond was set at $300,000 cash.

An attorney has not yet been listed for Cage in the Jackson County case, and a court date has not been set.
