Kansas City man charged after victim fatally shot outside apartment during robbery
One person has been charged after a man was fatally shot during a robbery over the weekend outside a Kansas City apartment complex, the prosecutor’s office announced Tuesday in a news release.
Khalid Heron-Boone, 26, is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action in connection to the homicide, which happened June 7 in a parking lot behind Hyde Pointe Apartments. The victim was identified as 19-year-old Matthew Cox.
Kansas City police were called to the apartment complex in the 4100 block of Troost Avenue about 6:50 a.m. after the ShotSpotter system alerted police to gunfire in the area.
According to charging documents, police officers found a man, later identified as Cox, with a gunshot wound to the chest and with his pockets turned out. Cox was taken to a hospital, where he died.
A witness told police he and the victim were in the parking lot when he heard what sounded like Heron-Boone yell after the gunshot, according to court records. The witness said he then saw a vehicle leave the parking lot. He described the vehicle as the same type of car driven by Heron-Boone’s brother.
In an interview with police, Heron-Boone said he had been up all night doing “coke” and playing video games at his home with a juvenile and Cox. He said they went outside and were going to leave when he heard someone yell, “Get down.” Heron-Boone said he ran away and then heard a gunshot. He said he saw Cox on the ground and went back inside the apartment to call 911.
Police received information during the investigation that the suspect was a tenant at the apartment building, described as wearing a dark-colored coat, red shoes and sweatpants.
Court records indicate that the clothing description matched Heron-Boone, who was seen at police headquarters wearing a dark-colored jacket, red shoes and red sweatpants.
Another witness later told police that Heron-Boone and another person allegedly talked about meeting Cox outside and robbing him, court records said.
Later, Heron-Boone came back to the apartment, the witness said , and asked the witness to call police because Cox had been robbed and shot.
The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against Heron-Boone on Monday.
He was taken into custody and booked into the Jackson County jail, and bond was set at $200,000 cash.
As of Tuesday, an attorney had not yet been listed for the defendant. A bond review hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. June 17.
