According to Kansas City police, Steven Newby died Tuesday after being stabbed near the Family Dollar store at 18th Street and Prospect Avenue. The incident happened just before 7:30 p.m.

Officers who were called to the area found the victim and began CPR and other life-saving measures, but he died at the scene. Police on Friday identified the victim as Newby.

Police were investigating Newby’s death as a homicide.

A person of interest was taken into custody after the killing, police said. It was unclear Friday if that person was arrested or released after questioning.
