Fleeing driver dies after rear-ending car, then causing second collision, KC police say
A fleeing motorist was killed and two other people were seriously injured Monday in a multiple vehicle wreck, after a hit-and-run crash moments earlier in south Kansas City, according to police.
Police have not released the name and age of the person who died. The conditions of the injured motorists were not immediately available.
The crash was reported around noon at Bannister and James A. Reed roads in south Kansas City.
According to initial police reports, the driver of a Mercedes allegedly rear-ended a Chrysler 200 that had stopped for a red traffic light at the intersection of East 87th Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard.
The driver of the Mercedes sped away when the driver of the Chrysler got out of their vehicle to exchange insurance information. The driver of the Chrysler jumped back in their vehicle and chased the fleeing Mercedes to get the license plates number, according to police.
The driver of the Chrysler followed the Mercedes as it sped eastbound on 87th Street. That driver later told police that the Mercedes appear to exceed 100 mph.
The Mercedes continued south on James A. Reed Road and sped through a red traffic light at Bannister Road.
The Mercedes then struck a westbound Ford Edge and both vehicles hit an eastbound Ford F-150 pickup, which then slammed into a traffic signal pole, according to police.
The driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford Edge received critical injuries. The driver of the Ford F-150 received serious injuries. The driver of the Chrysler was not injured in the collision.
No other details were released.
